I tumbled into the front seat of a friends car and we headed down the mountain from Rio Negro headed for Medellin on the last long haul for at least awhile.
I had been back and forth to China numerous times and this was the 3rd trip to Colombia. I was going to stay put for at least a few years I said to myself.
I had spent 6 months in Colombia, 6 months in Southern China, 18 months in Central China and rattled around like a marble is a can in between. Now I was planning to spend an unknown length of time back in Colombia, my 4th time since 2005.
All together I had spent a whole lot of time on airplanes and in airports, packing repacking and carrying anywhere from 1 – 8 suitcases to opposite sides of the planet.
Through all of this I saw countless other travelers from pampered professionals in 1st class on newer 747s to single parents trying to control their brood in the depths of no class on small planes almost as old as myself.
Many of them shared 1 common trait, though not a common bond, that truly surprised me.
The one thing that stood out most in my mind is that so many of them had little, if any, clue about what they were doing.
It didn’t even seem to make that much difference who they are or how traveled they are.
Whether it was the man in the charcoal suit loosing his temper as he opened a suitcase to discover that something had broken open and spilled all over everything inside; or the family trying to maintain when they all had diarrhea.
They all had one thing in common; a lack of travel savvy.
They either never thought through what they were doing or didn’t understand how it all works. For whatever reason they were completely miserable and in almost every case their problems were easily avoidable.
This is why I decided to write the book Smart Safe Traveler and make this website.
